Exclusive Video Interview: Author & Showrunner Blake Crouch & Executive Producer Matt Tolmach on Bringing Dark Matter to TV

Dark MatterDark Matter premiered yesterday on Apple TV+. The series, which is based on the critically acclaimed science fiction novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist, who when walking home is abducted and sent to an alternate version of his life, where everything is different. Dessen must navigate the maze of realities to return to his own reality and save his real family from a terrifying enemy: himself.

Recently, Crouch, who also serves as showrunner on the series, and executive producer, Matt Tolmach, spoke with SciFi Vision about bringing the novel to television.

Surprisingly, they originally started developing Dark Matter as a film, according to Tolmach. “The challenge then was how do we reduce this sprawling story into two hours,” Tolmach told the site. “...It isn't that we didn't nail it, [but] I think the material was telling us to do something different.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Jennifer Connelly Talks Dark Matter, Now on Apple TV+

Dark MatterDark Matter, which premieres today on Apple TV+, is based on the critically acclaimed blockbuster novel of the same name by bestselling author Blake Crouch. Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist who is abducted while walking home and brought into an alternate universe where everything is different, including the fact that in this new world, he is not married to his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly). Dessen must find his way through a labyrinth of other realities to make his way back to his own and save his family from a frightening foe: himself.

Recently, Connelly spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the thrilling sci-fi series.

In the series, although not as many as Edgerton, Connelly does play multiple versions of her character that she had to differentiate, but unlike some of his, they were “pretty separated in the episodes” and there were “pretty big distinctions” according to the actress. However, there were some things that remained the same. “I thought about that there were some fundamental characteristics of the person that I thought would remain consistent through the different versions, but that, clearly, there were ways in which the different experiences had marked her,” Connelly explained to the site. “So, I thought about that, especially in creating, Daniela Two and making choices for her, you know, most notably, she was single, she didn't have children, she was working as a visual artist and was successful in doing that. She hadn't experienced the kind of grief and loss that Daniela One had experienced. So, those were some really big differences between their lives that I think impacted the way she kind of moved through the world and interacted with people.”

Blu-ray Review: Madame Web - Out Now

Madame WebToday Madame Web was released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The Marvel heroine origin story follows Cassandra Web (Dakota Johnson), a paramedic in Manhattan, who after a brush with death discovers she has clairvoyant abilities and must face revelations from her past. Saving three young women, Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Anya (Isabela Merced), and Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), who are destined to become heroines of their own, Cassandra uses her power to see the future to try to alter their fates, protecting them from a deadly adversary (Tahar Rahim) who has powers of his own.

It was nice to see a Marvel superhero film led by female heroines, and I appreciated the exploration of Cassandra’s powers, especially since they were mental abilities rather than physical ones. The filmmakers did a good job of showing visually how she could see the different possible future timelines and would alter them. I also enjoyed how the story was split between three different timelines and how it was told. Overall, the script was well written and kept me engaged throughout.

The visuals were also excellent, as to be expected from such a film, and it had many exciting special effects and action sequences. There was also a good bit of web imagery in cracks in glass and things which I thought helped to tie everything together. I also was pleased with the costumes the four women wore in the future, even if the glimpses were brief, but I think more than that might have been too much.
