The Serpent Queen

Creator, Showrunner, Executive Producer Justin Hayth, Executive Producer Erwin Stoff, along with Stars Samantha Morton and Minnie Driver, spoke about the recently released season two.

Samantha Morton plays Catherine de Medici and Minnie Driver is Queen Elizabeth I in the Starz series.

Descendants: The Rise of Red is a spinoff centered on the Queen of Hearts’ daughter, Red and Cinderella’s daughter, Chloe. The Rise of Red introduces new characters and includes familiar, beloved Descendants. The film mainly focuses on Red and Chloe traveling back in time to stop an event that has caused a negative effect in the future.

Kylie Cantrall plays Red, the daughter of Queen of Hearts. Red rebels against her mother’s dictatorship over Wonderland. Malia Baker plays Chloe, the teenage daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming, who arrives for her first year of Auradon Prep. The first day at Auradon Prep begins with the introduction of the new principal. It wasn’t in the cards for the day to go as planned and Red and Chloe travel back in time and must work together for a better future.

SciFi Vision had the opportunity to get the inside scoop on Kylie Cantrall’s and Malia Baker’s filming experience during a roundtable where they reminisced about filming the “Fight of Our Lives” scene and recalled Malia’s professionalism in staying in character even when she tripped and fell but continued singing.

The Serpent Queen returns to Starz tonight for its highly anticipated second season. The hit historical drama promises plenty of action, with its protagonist Catherne de Medici (Samantha Morton) taking on the equally formidable Elizabeth I, Queen of England (Minnie Driver).

It’s no secret that season two opens with a time jump. About a decade has passed and the Queen Regent has her hands full with the usual political backstabbing, religious conflict and family drama. If that’s not enough, a series of powerful new women show up at court, ready to match wits with the Serpent Queen.  

SciFi Vision asked the show’s creative team – creator/showrunner/EP Justin Haythe and co-EP Erwin Stoff – what Catherine has on her plate this season. 

Descendants: The Rise of Red is a spinoff centered on the Queen of Hearts’ daughter, Red (Kylie Cantrall), and Cinderella’s daughter, Chloe (Malia Baker). The Rise of Red introduces new characters and includes familiar, beloved Descendants. SciFi Vision was able to interview a few of the new faces to the Descendants Universe: Dara Reneé, Ruby Rose Turner, and Morgan Dudley.
 
Dara Reneé plays Uliana, the little sister of Ursula and Uma’s Aunt. Uliana is a new addition to the Descendants universe. Uliana lives up to the villain status in Rise of Red as the main antagonist.

Ruby Rose Turner plays Bridget, the younger version of the Queen of Hearts, whom Chloe and Red meet when traveling back in time. Rita Ora stars as the easily angered Queen of Hearts in the present-day; her younger self Bridget is sugary sweet.

Morgan Dudley stars as Ella, the younger version of Cinderella. Chloe and Red interact with Ella to gain insight into how they can stop the event that makes the Queen of Hearts mean.

The Apple TV+ series, Me, which premieres today, follows twelve-year-old Ben (Lucian-River Chauhan), who is dealing with the ups and downs of middle school and adjusting to his new blended family when his mother (Dilshad Vadsaria) remarries and he gains not only a new parental figure (Kyle Howard), but a new stepsister (Abigail Pniowsky) as well. Things get even more difficult for Ben when he suddenly develops super powers. The new spin on a superhero origin story plays out over ten episodes as Ben goes on a journey of self-discovery of his powers as well as what it really means to be Ben.

Stars Chauhan and Pniowsky recently spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the series, including what attracted them to the roles, connecting with the characters, who their favorite super heroes are, who they’d love to be, and more.

My Lady Jane
Los Angeles Premiere Screening

My Lady Jane had its Los Angeles Premiere Screening at the Directors Guild of America featuring the first two episodes as well as an After Party celebrating the premiere.

Series stars Emily Bader (Lade Jane Grey), Jordan Peters (King Edward), Anna Chancellor (Lady Frances), Rob Brydon (Lord Dudley), Abbie Hern (Princess Bess), Michael Workeye (Archer), and series director, Jamie Babbit joined SciFi Vision on the red carpet to share their excitement for the night.

The authors, Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows of the book, My Lady Jane which the series is based on, were also in attendance on the red carpet.

My Lady Jane is a series based on the Lady Jane Grey who was queen for the shortest reign, nine days, in British history. The series reimagines Lady Jane’s life not ending in a beheading.

Boneyard comes to theaters starting today. Directed by Asif Akbar and inspired by real events, when skeletal remains belonging to eleven female victims are discovered in the New Mexico desert, police open an investigation and the FBI is called in for assistance. Police Chief Carter (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Detective Ortega (Brian Van Holt) and his partner, Detective Young (Nora Zehetner), and Agent Petrovick (Mel Gibson) set out on a multi-agency manhunt to identify and catch the serial killer, but as they clash, suspicion is cast in all directions.

Recently, Zehetner spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the film, including why she was drawn to the character, how she prepared, working with Van Holt, what she looks for in roles, and much more.

Yesterday, Space Cadet premiered on Prime Video. Tiffany “Rex” Simpson (Emma Roberts)’s dream had been to go to space, but her plans changed when her mother passed. Determined that it’s not too late to get back on track, she applies to NASA. Her application, embellished by her best friend Nadine (Poppy Liu), gets her to the NASA’s ultra-competitive astronaut training program. Rex is quickly in over her head and must rely on her determination and quick wits. NASA program directors Logan (Tom Hopper) and Pam (Gabrielle Union) definitely take notice, but is it enough? Can she make her dream come true before she blows her cover?

An expansion of the original series, Orphan Black: Echoes takes place in the future and continues the exploitations of science. Krysten Ritter stars as Lucy in the sci-fi thriller, a woman who wakes up without a past and soon discovers that she was not born, but printed. Although she doesn’t know it yet, her creator is none other than Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes), Sarah (Tatiana Maslany)’s grown daughter from the original series. 

In episode two, which premiered last night, Lucy took the kidnapped Jules (Amanda Fix) to Settlement House, getting Craig (Jonathan Whittaker)’s help in an interrogation of the teenage girl, who she believes is the same as her, hoping to shed some light on what’s going on.

According to John Fawcett, who co-created the original series and serves as an executive producer and director of this news series, there was discussion even back at the end of the original series that they wanted to have some kind of continuation of the Orphan Black story. “[Graeme Manson and I] always made jokes about what the spin off could be,” Fawcett told SciFi Vision during a recent interview. “Ultimately, Boat Rocker and Anna [Fishko] came up with the concept for Echoes and brought me on to help develop it.”
