DVD Review: "Teen Wolf" Season 2 - Just as Much Bite

Teen Wolf Season 2Teen Wolf may have started as a reimagining of the film of the same name, but it's easy to tell very early on that it was a lot different than it's predecessor. The story follows werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), as he learns what it means to be a werewolf, and deals with all the problems it creates, including having to hide his relationship with Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) from her family, who happen to be werewolf hunters.

The second season focuses on the new supernatural threat, the Kanima, who can paralyze victims with the toxin in its nails. Scott and his friends try to figure out who the new creature is, as well as who is directing it to kill, all while also dealing with whatever is going on with Lydia, new werewolves, and a new werewolf hunter, who is even more of a threat than they have encountered previously.

DVD Review: "Atlas Shrugged: Part II"

Atlas Shrugged: Part IIBefore watching Atlas Shrugged Part II, I decided to watch the first film, and I watched them back to back. One thing to be noted is that the two films, although revolving around the same characters, have completely different casts, which felt very disjointed. The story is one overall all arch, and while they are two separate films, if you don't watch the first you miss a large chunk of the story. I believe that you could follow Part II without having seen its predecessor and still understand it, but I don't think it would have the same impact. Everything that happens in Part II is fueled by Part I:

Who is John Galt? That's the mystery that's woven throughout the films as the best and the brightest start disappearing, and is also used as a saying when one doesn't know an answer to something they are asked.

The main characters of the films are the protagonist Dagny Taggart, played by Samantha Mathis (Taylor Schilling in Part I) and her love interest Henry "Hank" Reardon, played by Jason Beghe (Grant Bowler in Part I). While there is a love story, it takes a backseat to all of the problems that they and the country are facing. The story starts in a dystopian United States (Part I starts in 2016, Part II does not specify) during an economic depression. Prices have skyrocketed and with the cost of fuel and oil rising, the predominant form of travel has become rail transportation, but even the railways are in need of repair.

DVD Review: "Femme Fatales: Season One" Review - A Blend of Erotica & Film Noir

By Jamie Ruby

Femme Fatales: Season OneFemme Fatales: The Complete First Season

The Cinemax adult series Femme Fatales blends film noir, erotica, and variety of other genres. Each episode gives you something different.

Season one is full of mostly standalone episodes, with the exception of two two-parters, one being the season finale. The overall theme of the show seems to be revenge by women who have been done wrong. Each episode opens with Tanit Phoenix as Lilith (sometimes after the opening teaser), sort of reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt, talking about what's to come during the episode.

DVD Review: "Ruby Sparks"

By Jamie Ruby

Ruby SparksRuby Sparks stars Paul Dano as Calvin Weir-Fields, a struggling novelist who after finding fame as a teenager, now has writers' block. To kickstart his creativity, his therapist (Elliot Gould) tells him he should write about someone who would love his dog the way he is, timid and slobbery. So Calvin starts writing about a young woman, Ruby Sparks, and unwittingly ends up falling in love with her, which he thinks is a problem, because she's not real.

The more he writes, the more real she becomes, until her underthings start showing up and he sees her in his apartment. He freaks out, assuming he's had some kind of mental breakdown, but soon realizes that other people can see her too, and that he controls her with his writing.

The film is in much part about loving someone for who they are and accepting all their faults. Calvin learns that trying to change someone can have costs, as the more he controls her, the less she is the woman he fell in love with, and that love is often complicated, but that's what makes it real.

DVD Review: "The Raven:" Underwhelming, but Worth the Watch

The RavenThe Raven, set in the mid-1800s in Baltimore, is a fictional account of the last few days of Edgar Allan Poe's life, and what could have transpired. Don't let the title fool you; however, the film is not about his poem, nor even the bird. A serial killer is murdering people in ways that come from the pages of Poe's works, such as The Murders in the Rue Morgue, which starts the story.

DVD Review: "Bones" Season 7

BonesSeason six of Bones left the audience with quite a shocker, which revealed that Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) was pregnant with Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz)'s child. Up until this point, a big part of the show was about the sexual tension between them, and it was never known to the audience that the two were a couple. Season seven deals with the aftermath of Brennan's reveal as well as her pregnancy and Christine's birth. The season also deals with them moving in together, and their compromises on providing for their child (Brennan is rich and wants to give the baby everything, which causes some disagreements).

"Snow White and the Huntsman:" Visually Stunning

Snow White and the HuntsmanSnow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron, comes to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday.

The film follows Snow White (Stewart), who after her mother has died and Evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) has married and killed her father, is put in a cell and left in the dungeon. As in the original Snow White tale, the queen asks the mirror (Christopher Obi) who is the fairest, and as Snow White is now of age, he says that Snow White is now the fairest. The mirror also tells her that Snow White is the key to her immortality, so the queen sends for her to be killed, and once she escapes the castle, sends the Huntsman (Hemsworth) after her.

Before I go into reviewing the storyline of the film I want to start with the look, because for me, that's what I will remember most. Visually the film was absolutely breathtaking in many of the scenes. From the grand sets of the castle and the Dark Forest, to the visual effects of the fairies, to the animation of the "obsidian shards," it really was a beautiful film.

"Decoy Bride" - DVD/Blu-Ray Review

By Jamie Ruby

Decoy BrideKatie (Kelly MacDonald), the only single woman left on the small Scottish island of Hegg, lives a boring life with her sick mother. All that changes when the island is visited by famous movie star Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) and British author James Arber (David Tennant), as they come to the remote location after their first wedding attempt was botched by the paparazzi. The island was chosen because James previously described the castle where they would be married and the island in his novel - in gross exaggeration. Lara's assistants work feverishly to transform an entire castle to be perfect for the bride, as well as take precautions to keep the press at bay.

When it's apparent that the press cannot be so easily swayed, the assistants decide to find a decoy bride.

"Some Guy Who Kills People" - DVD Review

Some Guy Who Kills PeopleWhen I first received the DVD to review, I wasn't sure what to think with it's title, but don't let that deter you. In retrospect, the title actually fits the mood of the film.

Some Guy Who Kills People
is partially a horror movie - it does have murder and blood and guts - but it's also a great character driven story. The star of the film is Kevin Corrigan, who plays the character of Ken Boyd. Boyd is 34 and still living at home with his mother (Karen Black), working as an ice cream parlor attendant. Boyd is very quiet and withdrawn - he's returned from a mental institution after severe mental trauma from being beaten and tortured by a group of high school kids. He releases tension by his comic art, where he can live out his dark fantasies of revenge.
