DVD Review: Haven The Complete Fourth Season - Out Now

By Jamie Ruby

HavenSeason four of Haven is the best season yet, and really gets into the mythology of the show and who Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) really is.

Episode one picks up six months after the events of season three after Audrey entered the barn. Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour), who had disappeared with Audrey returns to find a different Haven. Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) has left the town after being blamed for the Troubles getting worse after Audrey disappeared, who is nowhere to be found. Dwight Hendrickson (Adam Copeland) is now running things as the sheriff.

Audrey meanwhile is stuck in a bar with a new identity, believing herself to be Lexie, with no memory of her last life. A mysterious man, William (Colin Ferguson), claims to be there to help, but it's unclear if he is part of the problem.

HavenSeason four also introduces the character of Jennifer Mason (Emma Lahana), who has a special connection to the town and may be the only one who can bring Audrey back.

Duke's brother Wade (Christian Camargo) also shows up in the town, causing more trouble than good.

Season four also features the return of Jordan McKee (Kate Kelton) who continues to stir things up.

I really enjoyed this season and the storylines. I love how the show does such a great job having mystery-of-the-week episodes, yet keeps the over-arcing mythology story at the forefront, especially this season. It's a great balance.

As always, the series brings fantastic actors, and the guest cast this year is no different. I especially enjoyed Ferguson joining the cast and watching the truth about William unfold as well as learning about William in relation to Mara.

Rose also stands out this year playing different iterations of her character, including some new ones with the addition of Lexie and Mara. Her transformations are truly believable.

Two episodes I want to spotlight are episodes 10 and 11, "The Trouble with Troubles" and "Shot in the Dark." The former is a really fun episode where Audrey is in an alternate Haven where the troubles don't exist and everything and everyone is different. The latter is a unique episode that features the Darkside Seekers (Danny Masterson and Kris Lemche) from the webisodes.

Bonus Features:

Inside Haven Featurettes - These featurettes each focus on a different aspect of production, whether it be how a prop, set, or special effect was made, and often includes the actors talking about some of the challenges involved in filming with it. My favorites were hearing about creating the ash people and how the squibs are used to simulate the actors being shot. I've included the list of these, there are quite a few:

Exploding Van
Ash People
Sewer Set
Douens
Nova Scotia
The Score
Squibs
Diving Suits
The Flower
Disaster Area
Darkside Detector
35MM Film
The Cave

Haven Panel Highlights:

San Diego Comic-Con Panel - This feature is over 23 minutes long and features Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Adam Copeland, Executive Producer Shawn Piller, Executive Producer Matt McGuinness, Executive Producer Gabrielle Stanton, and Co-creator Sam Ernst. Colin Ferguson serves as moderator.

Nerd HQ Panel - This panel, introduced by Firefly's Alan Tudyk, is hilarious and much less formal than the other panels. It features Eric Balfour, Lucas Bryant, Adam Copeland, Colin Ferguson, and Emily Rose. This feature is almost 20 minutes long.

New York Comic Con Panel - This panel, introduced by Richard Donat and John Dunsworth, features Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour, Executive Producer Shawn Piller, Writer Brian Millikin, and Writer Nick Parker. It's over 20 minutes long.

Cast Interviews:

Welcome to Alternate Haven - There are clips of the alternate Haven episode, "The Trouble with Troubles," and then the cast talking about playing different versions of their characters.

Haven Trivia Challenge - This feature is of the actors sitting around a table playing a trivia game. Team one is Emily Rose vs Lucas Bryant and team two is Eric Balfour vs Adam Copeland, featuring Colin Ferguson as the "all-time guesser." They take turns giving clues to get the players to identify the "guess word" without using the forbidden words. It's a feature that is both fun and funny.

The Cast Answer Fan Questions - This feature is exactly what it sounds like, and the four main actors take turns answering questions from Twitter and Facebook. Some of their answers are serious and some are much more goofy.

Darkside Seekers Webisodes - There are eight of these. The first five are raw footage submitted anonymously to the Darkside Seekers. The last three are clips of the Darkside Seekers getting footage. They are all very brief. I've listed them below:

Exhibit 14X: The Fulgurite
Exhibit 23X: The Tattoo
Exhibit 32X: The Footprint
Exhibit 25X: The Impact
Exhibit 27X: The Aftermath
Coming to Haven
Finally in Haven
At the Haven Herald

Pancakes: The Morning After Deleted Scene - This feature is a shippy deleted/extended scene between Audrey and Nathan of the morning after they finally got together, when Nathan literally makes pancakes.

Behind-the-Scenes Reel - This is a short feature made of behind-the-scenes clips, but there is no talking or explanations or anything.

Blooper Reel - Bloopers are generally my favorites, and this feature is over eleven minutes!

Audio Commentaries:
4.01 Fallout - Gabrielle Stanton & Matt McGuinness
4.05 The New Girl - Brian Millikin & Nick Parker
4.08 Crush - Speed Weed & Shernold Edwards
4.09 William - Shernold Edwards & Speed Weed
4.11 Shot in the Dark - Nick Parker & Brian Millikin
4.13 The Lighthouse - Matt McGuinness & Gabrielle Stanton

HavenMini Comic Book: In the Beginning - This comic, in my opinion, is one of the best parts of the set. I don't want to give too much away, but it basically tells the story of Mara and William and how the troubles started, how Mara came to be different incarnations, and why she returns to Haven again and again, and what the town really is.

Packaging - The blu-ray set contains four discs (disc one has episodes 1-4, disc two has 5-8, disc 3 has 9-12, and disc four contains episode 13 and the bonus features). The episodes with number and short description are listed on the inside of the cover insert. It also lists all the bonus features (including the sub features) which is very helpful.

The set comes in the normal blue clamshell case with a slip cover that covers from the side. Inside the slipcover is also the comic book.

In my opinion, if you are fan of Haven, this set is definitely worth it. It contains a slew of bonus features, and great ones at that. If you haven't seen Haven before, then it's a great time to start watching before the new season, which starts September 11th on Syfy.
