"Neverland" Two-Part Miniseries Premieres Tonight on Syfy

By Jamie Ruby

NeverlandIf you think you know the story of Peter Pan, think again. Tonight Syfy will premiere the first half of its four-hour original miniseries, Neverland, which will conclude tomorrow night. The story is a prequel - an origin story, penned by Nick Willing, who previously directed the Syfy miniseries Alice, which he also wrote, and Tin Man. If you have watched either of those, you probably already have an idea that Neverland, although containing bits of the classic, will stand on its own.

The Walking Dead 2x04, "Cherokee Rose"

By Karen Moul

The Walking DeadIt was another slow week on The Walking Dead. In TWD time Sophia has only been missing three days, but in viewer time this is week four and Darryl is the only person who cares if she's still alive. More and more it looks like the search for the missing child is simply a device to develop Darryl's character. And while it seems to be working (if forum chatter is any indication, he's a very popular character), viewers are increasingly frustrated with the glacial pace of this season's storytelling.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: Behind the Scenes

By Karen Moul

Macy's Thanksgiving Day ParadeNow in its 85th year, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, stuffing, and green bean casserole. More than 3.5 million people are expected to line the parade route and 50 million more will watch on TV.

The parade's signature element is the gigantic helium balloons that tower over the streets of New York City. Each year, more than a million people flock to the Upper West Side the night before the parade to see the balloons inflated. This afternoon SciFi Vision joined in the fun with a special behind-the-scenes tour.

The Walking Dead: Episode 2x03, “Save the Last One”

By Karen Moul

The Walking DeadI take back much of what I said last week. In “Bloodletting” I thought we were seeing another side of Shane, a side that was loyal and responsible and almost likeable. This week, I’m pretty sure that is the last time anyone will use those words to describe Shane.

But I don’t mind being wrong when we get an ending this delicious. The final scene was so shockingly great, most viewers didn’t even notice that almost nothing happened during the entire rest of the episode. Those last five minutes cemented Shane’s position as the most compelling character on the show. Yes, his actions were horrifying, but they raised a number of fascinating questions about morality and survival and to what extent the two are compatible.

Rick is the show’s moral center and always does the honorable thing; he’s constantly risking his life for others. He went back into Atlanta after Merle, he ran off after Sophia, and he gives away guns to everyone he meets. There’s no way he would do the things that Shane has done, even if it meant he would survive.

But while Rick sees the world as black and white, Shane is operating in a very grey area.

The Walking Dead: Episode 2x02, "Bloodletting"

By Karen Moul

The Walking DeadWith thirteen episodes this season, the writers of The Walking Dead have the luxury of slowing down and developing the characters. Week two was another slow episode, but I think these early episodes devoted to character development will pay off down the road.

I love what they did with Shane this week. They’ve been building him up to be a villain almost as dangerous as the walkers. He left Rick for dead, slept with his wife, and tried to make Rick’s family his own. He even tried to rape Lori. He really has not been a good friend.

And suddenly, there is another side to Shane, a side that is likeable.

The Walking Dead: 2x01, "What Lies Ahead"

By Karen Moul

The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead returned this week, opening the second season with a truly terrifying hour of television. Unfortunately, the episode was an hour and half long, which meant the story dragged at times.

Although the episode was perhaps longer than necessary, it was a great premiere in which the creative team gave notice that season two raises the stakes in every way. In particular, the search for Sophia was too drawn out. But I totally fell for the diversion, which meant I had a great OMG moment at the end when Carl was shot. I don’t know if he’ll live or die, but I’m not counting on him making it. If the writers are willing to shoot him, I think they’re willing to kill him. We’ve been warned: don’t get too attached to anyone this season.

By Karen Moul

The Sing-OffRatings juggernaut American Idol has spawned endless copies all over the world; the quality of those shows varies. There have been at least a half-dozen singing competitions in the last few years and The Sing-Off is the best of the bunch. It's got talented contestants, excellent judges, and a likeable host with actual singing experience, but where this show really stands out is in its emphasis on technical excellence.
